Impunity Is A Terrible Thing
The Future of Ecocide and Art
“Dawn 7-26-25 Vinalhaven Island, Maine” Aviva Rahmani
In time, human impunity does not stand. That is not the same as justice but history does confer judgements to challenge impunity.
I first came across the word impunity in a book by Nancy Princenthal, Unspeakable Acts: Women, Art, and Sexual Violence in the 1970s. At the close of that book, about how violence against women, expressed in art, confronts a culture of indifference to that violence, she used the word impunity. As I wrote in "J'accuse," there are many parallels between interpersonal rape and the international behavior of this American administration.
