In the Narrative Wars Fascists and Epstein Class Money Can Gaslight Our Reality
“Portrait of the Artists Mother” 44”x36” Egg Tempera on wood 1978 Aviva Rahmani
Line is more important in Asian art than Western because of the grounding in calligraphy: writing snd painting are fused. But line for its own sake also has a place in Western art traditions. Line emerged with greater formal authority after Europe began importing Asian art. Line interests me in many ways, not only in painting, but in dance, in ecological ecotones and political narratives.
In the painting above of my mother, the lines and shapes of her mouth are entirely and deliberately erased, as her voice was erased as a person, because she was a woman. That is the world many on the fascist far right wants us to accept as present reality.
