Detail from “Tidal Flushing” installation, Hannam University, Daejeon, South Korea watercolor and lithographic pencil on South Korean Mulberry paper 2026

I recently had a brief conversation with a representative from the United Nations about what art might contribute to our current plethora of global crises. I simply said, “art can see things science can’t.” I might have further argued that we can’t see solutions to problems if we can’t clearly see those problems. I might further argue, that my own experience of what is revealed from artmaking has often surprised me. For example, in the installation for, “Tidal Flushing,” in South Korea I saw at least three important things I didn’t expect.
